The Flame Journal, or 薪火志 in Chinese, aims to make Chinese living heritage easier to understand. We begin with cultural practices, connect them with people and objects, and provide sources for further checking. Readers should be able to explore Chinese culture and check the evidence behind what they read here. For new content from 1 October 2026, we will write the English and Chinese editions independently for their readers, using a shared factual and source basis. Earlier articles were primarily translated from Chinese. In English, we explain cultural context and retain Chinese names to help readers find the original records. Our sources and editorial policy explains this approach and how we handle corrections.
Public education comes first. The Flame Journal currently operates solely to promote Chinese culture, with no commercial relationships. We receive no commissions from external links, gifts or promotional payments. Buying guidance serves readers who want to take their interest further. We do not guarantee a person’s identity or a product’s authenticity solely on the basis of a label or title. One Flame. All Lands. This is the idea we want to carry forward.
